YES AND NO.
Most private commercial insurance and Medicare require a physician's referral.
Legally, the state of California permits direct patient access, which means that a doctor's referral is not required to receive physical therapy services initially.
If you are a cash-paying patient, you can be seen by a physical therapist for 12 visits or six weeks, whichever comes first, without a doctor's prescription. If you require continued treatment beyond that period, you will need to obtain a prescription from your doctor. Alternatively, you may provide us with proof of a physician's diagnosis for the condition for which you seek treatment.
Please bring the following to your first visit:
- Completed registration forms from your registration packet. You will be mailed a registration packet which includes information about the clinic and your registration forms. Please fill out all of the forms before you come in as this will save you time.
- Your photo ID.
- Your insurance card, if any.
- Your physician referral, if any. If your physician was planning on faxing the referral to our office, please call to confirm that we have received it before your first visit.
- Comfortable clothing, including shoes and socks, that are appropriate for exercise. We have lockers and a changing room.
Your first visit will be approximately one hour. This is your evaluation. Expect to spend 10 to 15 minutes before the first appointment registering with the front office.
Subsequent visits are approximately 30 minutes.
There is no fee if you cancel or reschedule your appointment more than 48 hours in advance. If you cancel or reschedule your appointment less than 48 hours in advance, a $50 fee will be charged.
Insurance reimbursement can be very confusing. We understand.
For our patients using insurance, please wait six weeks after your initial visit for insurance reimbursement. You should receive an explanation of benefits from your insurance for your visit within six weeks of the visit. If you have not received an explanation of benefits for the visit, please contact us.
If you have any other questions regarding your insurance reimbursement, payments, or charges, please do not hesitate to contact us. We'll need you to have your Explanation of Benefits available for reference.
